Western Illinois falls to Valparaiso despite early goal from Schilling

Western Illinois University's women's soccer team lost 5-1 to Valparaiso on Thursday evening at Northwest Field. The Leathernecks took an early lead when freshman Abigail Schilling scored her first career goal just 79 seconds into the match. Valparaiso responded quickly, scoring four goals in the opening 20 minutes, including two by Kiara Desiderio.

In the second half, Western Illinois created more chances, taking six shots and earning a penalty kick in the 79th minute. Kayla Turner's attempt was saved by Valparaiso's goalkeeper. Ariel Bernard made six saves for Western Illinois during the match.

The loss drops WIU to a 1-7 record this season. The team will play again at home on Sunday against Omaha at Northwest Field.
