Western Illinois University's women's volleyball team lost to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in a four-set match on Saturday morning at the Meeks Family Fieldhouse. The Leathernecks started strong, winning the first set 25-18 after a 4-0 run led by Jaleah Bauss, who contributed both an ace and an assist. Audrey Pender and Kennedy Adair added kills, while Keyana Cruse provided multiple points in the opening frame.
In the second set, Western Illinois built an early lead with kills from Cruse and Adair, and blocks from Elizabeth Ziegler and Grace Kremer. The set saw six ties and three lead changes before UAB secured a 25-22 win.
UAB gained momentum in the third set through effective blocking and serving. Despite nine kills from Western Illinois, errors increased for the Leathernecks as UAB took the set 25-14.
The fourth set featured efforts from Pender, Kremer, Martyna Sowiak, Madelyn Norton, Karlie Lane, and Cruse to keep Western Illinois competitive. However, UAB's late serving run resulted in a 25-18 win for the Blazers.
Western Illinois now holds a season record of 1-8. The team will next play against Kansas City Roos on September 16 in Kansas City before hosting the Leatherneck Classic on September 18-19 in Macomb.
