The price of local government: City of Blue Island

The City of Blue Island budget was $32.36 million for its 2015 fiscal year, or $5,670.97 per household.

That's an increase of 9.3 percent from 2014, when the city spent $29.61 million, or $5,187.51 per household.

Blue Island has 5,707 households and a population of 23,652.

Since 2002, the City of Blue Island budget has fallen by 5.5 percent, from $34.23 million. The city population has grown 14.9 percent over the same period, from 20,585.

Salaries accounted for 26.4 percent of city spending in 2015. Blue Island property taxpayers paid $8.54 million for 118 full-time employees and 92 part-time employees.

In 2002, the city had 141 full-time employees and 190 part-time employees, and spent $9.94 million.
