The price of local government in 2016: Hancock County

The Hancock County budget was $12.90 million for its 2016 fiscal year.

That's an increase of 2.2 percent from 2015, when the county spent $12.62 million.

Hancock County has a population of 18,508.

Since 2001, the Hancock County budget has grown by 17.1 percent, from $11.02 million. The county population has fallen seven percent over the same period, from 19,909.

Salaries accounted for 36.8 percent of county spending in 2016. Hancock County property taxpayers paid $4.75 million for 115 full-time employees and 94 part-time employees.

In 2001, the county had 150 full-time employees and 20 part-time employees, and spent $4.13 million.
