Brown County Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met May 22.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The meeting of the Board of Education was held on Wednesday evening, May 22, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. at the Brown County High School Auditorium at 500E Main St, Mt. Sterling. The meeting was called to order by Krupps. The minutes were recorded by Casey Perry.

On roll call, Blaesing, aye; Blakeley, aye; Fullerton, aye; Heinecke, aye; Hughes, aye; Krupps, aye; McCaskill, aye.

In attendance: Roger Ehret, Judy Sieben, Diane Wagner, Tim Phillips, Sue Tomlinson, Marsha Wagner, Kacy Dunlap, Dave Ferrill, Courtney Pryor, Dan Wagner, Pete Jenkins, Tracy Conley, Kris Gallaher, James McKay, Karen Jirjis, Pollee Craven, Shelly Sheffler.

Mrs. Craven introduced the High Schools May Student of the Month, Kacy Dunlap. Dunlap was nominated by Mr. Garrett. Dunlap was nominated for always putting her best effort into her work. Her growth as a student has been very impressive to watch in class and she is able to work with anyone in her class.

Mr. Dan Wagner questioned the Board in regards to the Open Meetings Act and if they had all been certified. He also stated that he didn’t feel that the minutes of the board meetings were detailed enough, he also felt that minutes were not posted in a timely fashion. Mr. Wagner also stated that he feels that the board does not specify what they are voting on coming out of closed session.

Mr. Pete Jenkins thanked the Board for moving the meeting to the auditorium to accommodate guests.

Jenkins also stated that he was disappointed in the fact that Jeff Schmitz had resigned due to difficulty working with administrators.

Motion made by Member Blaesing, seconded by Member Fullerton, to approve the consent agenda.

Committee Reports: Mr. Heath Fullerton gave the board a Building Committee Report with some summer items to be addressed; Some maintenance to the Elementary playground to replace old railroad ties. Cracks in the Middle School sidewalks will need to be repaired this summer.

Mr. James McKay, Maintenance Director also stated that many of the outside lights at the schools are being replaced with LED lights through an Ameren Grant.

Motion made by Member McCaskill, seconded by Member Blaesing, to Set a Budget Hearing to amend the FY19 Budget for June 26 at 5:45 pm in the Board of Education Office at 503 NW Cross, Mt. Sterling, IL

Motion by Member Krupps, seconded by Member McCaskill, to Authorize the Superintendent to prepare a tentative budget for the 2019-20 School Year

Motion by Member Fullerton, seconded by Member Hughes, to Authorize purchase of 2013 Model 3219 SKYJACK Scissorlift from Sunbelt Rentals for $5500 to be paid from 1% sales tax fund known as Fund 60

Administrative Reports & Raising Expectations speakers: Mrs. Shelly Sheffler addressed the board about multiple programs taking place at the Elementary School this summer. There will be Pre-K Summer Kamp help the month of June, along with K-4 Summer School. The Elementary School is also hosting a Summer Food Program for the community. Meals are also being served at the Versailles School and Timewell Baptist Church. Any child up to the age of 18 eats free at any of these locations. Anyone over the age of 18 is able to eat for $2. The YMCA is also offering the free meals to students attending their summer camp, but the meals at the YMCA are not open to public.

A.Motion by Member Blakeley, seconded by Member Fullerton, to go into closed session to approve any matter discussed in closed session as necessary including the approval of personnel employment, release, and other personnel items that may require action, and limited to those matters authorized for discussion in executive session by motion of the Board. Closed Session on the following subjects: a) the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the School District; b) collective negotiating matters between the School District and its employees or their representatives, or deliberations concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees i) pending, probable, or imminent litigation; or other matters appropriate for a closed meeting pursuant to the Open Meetings Act. at 8:03 pm.
