Brown County Community Unit School District No.1 Board of Education met Jan. 22.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Board of Education was held on Wednesday evening, January 22, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at the Brown County Board of Education Office at 503 NW Cross St, Mt. Sterling. The meeting was called to order by Krupps. The minutes were recorded by McKenzie Taute.

On roll call, Blaesing, yea; Blakeley, yea; Fullerton, yea; Heinecke, yea; Hughes, yea; Krupps, yea; McCaskill, absent.

In attendance: Vicki Phillips, Tracy Conley, Kris Gallaher, Shelly Sheffler, Pollee Craven, Dave Phelps, Tom Little, Judy Sieben, Sue Tomlinson, Dan Long, Cassie Lipcaman, Ashley Behymer, Corina Reid, Mary Ingram, David Mark Garrett, Kendall Hyde, Lynn Tomlinson, Annie Fullerton, Chelsey Howard.

Public Comment Speakers: David Mark Garrett addressed the board to discuss concerns about his two daughters currently enrolled in elementary school. Mr. Garrett acknowledged that his girls are getting extra reading and English help, but he would like them to have a Tagalog speaking interpreter to teach English as a second language and Filipino history.

Motion by Fullerton, seconded by Blasesing, to approve the consent agenda.

Motion by Blakeley, seconded by Fullerton, for the approval of Financial Reports.

Motion carried.

Motion by Heinecke, seconded by Hughes, for the Approval of Brown County CUSD #1 to be named as the Administrative Agent for the newly formed CEO Program between Brown County CUSD #1 and Schuyler‐Industry CUSD #5.

Roll call: Heinecke, yea; Hughes, yea; Blakeley, yea; McCaskill, absent; Krupps, abstain; Blaesing, yea; Fullerton, yea.

Motion carried.

Motion by Krupps, seconded by Heinecke, for the approval of the formation of BCMS “Girls Who Code” Club & the opening of an activity account for such.

Motion carried.

Motion by Fullerton, seconded by Blakeley, to approve the formation of a Hall of Fame and approval of related by‐laws as provided and opening Hall of Fame activity account for such.

The board discussed the 2020‐2021 school calendar. A staff member voiced concern in regards to the first day of student attendance being August 17th, 2020. With the current calendar, the first student attendance day interferes with several students submitting their 4‐H projects to the Illinois State Fair. Mrs. Phillips acknowledged that if the first student attendance day was not adjusted that this could cause an inconvenience for many students. The Board was in agreement with pushing the first student attendance day back to Tuesday, August 18th, 2020.

Motion by Heinecke, seconded by Fullerton, to approve the 2020‐2021 School Calendar with the adjustment to the calendar as needed.

Motion by Krupps, seconded by Fullerton, for the approval of the second reading of Press Plus Issue 102 as found below:

Motion by Blaesing, seconded by Blakeley, to go into closed session to approve any matter discussed in closed session as necessary including the approval of personnel employment, release, and other personnel items that may require action, and limited to those matters authorized for discussion in executive session by motion of the Board. Closed Session on the following subjects: a) the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the School District h) the placement of individual students in special education programs and other matters relating to individual students; or other matters appropriate for closed meeting pursuant to the Open Meetings Act. At 6:22 pm.
