The Schuyler County Humane Society is happy to start the New Year off right with a new expansion project.

"As 2020 ends, we have so much to look forward to in 2021," the humane society said in a Facebook post. "We are overjoyed to announce a much-needed expansion project."

The humane society, which opened five years ago, had no way of telling if it would be able to stay open.

"When we opened five years ago, we could not imagine what the future would hold. We had no way of knowing how the decision we made then would hold up over time," the humane society said in the Facebook post. "What has become abundantly clear is we need a dedicated area for intake and stray holds."

The expansion project will help accommodate larger animals and pregnant cats.

"By adding on to our existing building, we will be able to accommodate larger dogs more comfortably," the human society said on Facebook. "We will have an area just for pregnant cats and young kittens that will be peaceful and out of our hallways. Groundbreaking is anticipated this spring with a summer completion. We look forward to being able to better serve our community with an improved facility."

The humane society is currently taking donations for the expansion and said there would be many more opportunities for the community to get involved. Individuals interested in donating to the project can do so by going here.

"This is such an exciting project for the Schuyler County Humane Society. They take in so many cats and dogs, and this addition will help them to save more animals and find them great forever homes," the Rushville Chamber of Commerce said in the Facebook post.
