At the Nov. 21 meeting of the Macomb City Council, the police chief asked the board to consider adding another ranked sergeant position to the police department.

Chief Jerel Jones explained the current situation of the department to the board as a part of his request.

The Macomb Police Department’s four platoons are led by two lieutenants and two sergeants. The department currently has a vacancy of one lieutenant position, and the sergeants who interviewed to be lieutenant declined the promotion.

The chief asked that the city add one sergeant position to the department in the meantime to fill that leadership position until another lieutenant is promoted. This would not add any additional employees to the department. This arrangement would continue until a lieutenant is promoted within the department.

“This will allow for each platoon leader to be in merit ranked positions ultimately at the Macomb Police Department, which will primarily consists of sergeants and one lieutenant under the current structure until said position could potentially be filled in the future at the rank of Lietenant,” Jones said.

The council voted unanimously in favor of adding the position. Jones said this would not change the headcount at the Macomb Police Department.

Treasurer Ronald Ward was absent from the Nov. 21 meeting.

The council will meet again for the last time in 2022 at 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 19 at the Macomb City Hall at 232 East Jackson.
