Calhoun Elementary School Principal Christie Lorsbach Report
Staff had teacher institute on Jan. 3 and 4 to prepare for the upcoming semester. Brandi Hempen was on site Jan. 4th working with K-5 staff developing standards-based differentiation in instruction. This was overwhelmingly positive for staff and they are excited to welcome Brandi back for the next in-service in February.
Red-Cat speaker systems are being used in 9 classrooms to help amplify the teacher/classroom discussion and the feedback from teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. We now have many other teachers who are
asking to use/get a system for their classroom. Each system comes with a speaker, lanyard mic, a hand held mic and all equipment can be hooked up to the class Promethean boards. This has been an excellent tool. We did have a small pipe burst over break causing some damage to 4 classrooms in the West Wing. Huge thanks to Brenda, Lance Sibley, Claude Collins, Rod, Dub and the Pelletier Family (Brian, Sheri, Lilly and Alex) for stopping in to help assist in cleaning up the mess in these classrooms.
JH Scholastic Bowl sign-ups are complete and will start practicing soon during their lunch hour. CKH – Building student relationships – We have started holding Jr. High “Fish Bowls” once a week during lunch hour. This is where 2 students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade are randomly selected to participate in discussion activities to build positive relationships. The first one was a success!
The JH boys’ basketball season is going well and regionals are quickly approaching. The JH Volleyball season kicked off last Thursday at home against St. John’s. 7th grade lost, but in 3 close matches and 8th grade won. The team looks very talented and looks to have excellent potential for the upcoming season.
The PTO is working to replace the outside basketball hoops/backboards for the Jr. High playground and is considering funding to replace them on the 3-5 playground as well.
The state IAR tests will begin in March.
Student Council News: The first fundraiser was done with selling slushies and raised $305 to start the Student Council activity fund. The sign-up for volunteers to help tutor younger students will be posted next week.
