The Ohio Valley Conference announced its first in-season weekly report on Tuesday, naming Joel McIntyre as the conference's defensive player of the week.

McIntyre, a sophomore from Peoria, Illinois, played all 180 minutes of the Leathernecks' two games this weekend. The center-back was named captain ahead of the season, assuming a significant role as a vocal leader for the team.

"Joel is a great communicator," said Leatherneck head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "His communication level is gluing the backline and midfield together, which is a big factor in the team's defending."

In the match against Butler, McIntyre made several key plays, including a goal-line clearance in the first half to keep the game tied.

Western Illinois resumes action this week with matches at Bradley on August 29th and their home opener against Quincy on September 1st.
