The Western Illinois University cross country program is set to begin its 2024 season at the Walt Crawford Open hosted by Eastern Illinois University. The event will take place on Friday, August 30, with the women's 5K race starting at 4:45 p.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 5:30 p.m.

Scott Barnes will make his debut as head coach for Western Illinois, leading a team that returns several experienced runners from last year. The men's team includes five returning athletes and mid-year track distance transfer Mohammed Baghati. Returning members Sean Hudspath, Logan Lommel, Robert Perry, Logan Beckmier, and Richard Brown are expected to compete. Notably, Lommel was recently named an Ohio Valley Conference Runner to Watch.

On the women's side, Western Illinois brings back ten runners from the previous season. Aylana Cezar, Madison Trevena, Meg Simmons, Hannah Steinmeyer, Faith Procopio, Krissy Petrou, Maleigha Huston, Denise Dominguez, Lydia Bennett, and Ellie Bauer will represent the Leathernecks. Cezar finished 20th at last year's OVC Meet and qualified for the NCAA Midwest Region Meet alongside Simmons.

Following this meet, Western Illinois will participate in the Redbird Invite next week at Illinois State.
