In the season opener for the Western Illinois cross country team on Friday, weather played a key role for all teams.

The Eastern Illinois Walt Crawford Open was delayed twice and had the men's distance shortened, resulting in men and women running together.

In the women's 5k, the Leathernecks finished second overall, scoring 41 points. Eastern Illinois won the team portion with 21 points.

Madison Trevena led Western Illinois, finishing second overall in 18 minutes, 18.50 seconds. Maleigha Huston was the next Leatherneck to cross the line, finishing fifth in 19:23.50.

A pair of freshmen were next for the Leathernecks. Making their WIU debuts, Kinze Shea was 11th overall, scoring 10 points with a finishing time of 19:58.00. Fellow freshman Greta Sieren was next for WIU, finishing 21st overall and 11th in scoring with a time of 21:21.40.

Hannah Steinmeyer (23rd overall, 21:44.50), Ava Gorrie (24th overall, 21:52.00), and Kayden Gilmore (25th overall, 22:15.50) closed out the Leatherneck top seven.

In the men's race, Western Illinois entered four runners but could not record a team score.

Logan Lommel led the way for the Leathernecks, finishing fourth overall in 15:31.40. Logan Beckmier was ninth overall with a time of 15:48.80. Sean Hudspath clocked in at 16:24.30, good for 18th place.

Richard Brown closed out WIU's effort by finishing 31st overall in 17:30.40.

The Leathernecks are set to compete again next Friday at the NIU Huskie Opener in DeKalb.
