Western Illinois men's soccer team secured their first victory of the season in a Sunday evening match against Quincy at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The Leathernecks gained an early advantage with a first-half goal from captain Joel McIntyre, scored from a corner kick. The second half was marked by heightened tensions, resulting in six cards being issued in the final 35 minutes.

The Leathernecks had their first significant opportunity in the sixth minute when winger Tyler Philpott's shot led to a corner. About ten minutes later, another corner resulted in McIntyre finding the net, giving Western Illinois a one-nil lead.

The remainder of the first half saw limited action, with both teams earning two corners each. Leatherneck goalkeeper Micah Ramirez made four saves to keep Quincy scoreless.

Early in the second half, Diego Porras sent a long ball to Liam Gainey, who was ruled offside before receiving it. Gainey had another chance eight minutes later, but his attempt was saved by Quincy's goalkeeper. Philpott also had a notable opportunity inside the box, but his shot was saved.

Tensions escalated in the 70th minute when Quincy received a yellow card for dissent and Porras received one shortly after for a tackle. The most severe incident occurred when Quincy's Joao Pedro Amaral kicked Porras in the face during a challenge, resulting in a straight red card. Porras briefly left due to injury but re-entered three minutes later.

Western Illinois capitalized on this situation as Jimmy Baars delivered an injury free kick from about 40 yards out to Xavier Gagnon, who headed it into the far post for a two-nil lead. Despite further yellow cards issued to Western Illinois in the final six minutes, Ramirez made an outstanding save in the 81st minute and finished with six saves for the night.

Western Illinois aims to maintain their momentum when they face St. Ambrose on Thursday, September 5th at 5 PM.
