The Western Illinois University cross country team is set to compete in their third meet of the season this Friday at Illinois State University. The event, known as the Redbird Invite, will take place at the Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Illinois.
The competition begins with the women's 6K race at 5 p.m., followed by the men's 8K race. Participating teams include Western Illinois, Chicago State, Illinois State, Illinois Wesleyan, Illinois-Chicago, Missouri-St. Louis, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, SIUE-Edwardsville, and Valparaiso. Unattached runners will also be competing.
Last week at the Huskie Opener hosted by Northern Illinois University, the Leatherneck women finished third overall while the men secured second place. Madison Trevena led the women's team by finishing fifth overall on the 5K course with a time of 18:35.72. Maleigha Huston followed in 11th place with a time of 19:08.98 and Kinze Kirkland-Shea finished 14th in 19:34.67.
On the men's side, Logan Lommel finished second overall with a time of 19:57.53 and Logan Beckmier came in third at 20:13.72. Sean Hudspath placed tenth with a time of 21:18.31 and Richard Brown was twelfth at 22:08.34. Freshman Eason Comer completed Western Illinois' day by finishing nineteenth in 23:02.78.
Both Madison Trevena and Logan Lommel were honored as OVC Runners of the Week for their performances last week—marking the first time since October 28, 2019 that WIU cross country runners have received this recognition simultaneously.
Following this meet, Western Illinois cross country will have a three-week break before competing again on Friday, October 4 at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invite.
