NORMAL, Ill. – In their longest races of the season, the Western Illinois University men's and women's cross country squads delivered notable performances at the Illinois State Redbird Invitational on Friday.
Several personal records were set by individual Leathernecks, with the women finishing fourth overall and the men fifth.
The women scored 130 points, while Illinois State won the meet with 23 points. The Western Illinois men scored 152 points, with Illinois State securing victory with 29 points.
For the women, Madison Trevena led the Leathernecks in the 6K race, finishing 13th overall with a time of 22:30.7. Trevena ran with the leading pack for most of the race, placing fifth at the 3K checkpoint and ninth at the 5K mark. Her time was a new personal best by six seconds.
Kinze Kirkland-Shea was next for Western Illinois, crossing in 21st place at 23:01.1. Maleigha Huston followed in 25th place with a time of 23:20.3, also a new personal record.
Lydia Bennett (32nd, 23:40.8) and Ava Gorrie (40th, 24:20.2) completed Western Illinois' scoring efforts.
Additionally, Greta Sieren finished in 46th place with a time of 24:28.3.
In the men's 8K race, Logan Lommel led Western Illinois with a ninth-place finish at a time of 24:52.2. Logan Beckmier was next for WIU, finishing in 12th place with a new personal best of 25:07.7.
Other Leatherneck finishers included Sean Hudspath (43rd, 26:54.2) and Richard Brown (67th, 28:23.2). Eason Comer rounded out WIU's scoring by finishing in 72nd place at a time of 29:00.1.
Western Illinois will next compete at Notre Dame on October 4.
