Western Illinois University is set to conclude its non-conference schedule with matches against Northern Illinois University (NIU) and Indiana University Indianapolis (IU Indy). The Leathernecks will face NIU at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in Macomb, Illinois, on Friday, September 20, at 5 PM. They will then travel to Michael A. Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, to play IU Indy on Tuesday, September 24, at 7 PM. Both matches are available for streaming.

Northern Illinois currently holds a 2-6 record for the season. The Huskies secured victories over Chicago State and Mercyhurst but have struggled defensively early on. Historically, NIU has dominated Western Illinois with a lead in the all-time series of 27-5. This year, they are winless on the road.

IU Indianapolis has achieved a 3-2-1 record this season and has claimed wins against Incarnate Word and Houston Christian from the Ohio Valley Conference. Their standout player, Jose Antonio Herrera, leads with three goals and two game-winners.

Western Illinois recently celebrated a significant victory over Gonzaga with a score of 3-2 in Spokane. This marked their first road win since October 2022 and their first non-conference road win since October 2018.

The Leathernecks have posted a balanced record of 3-3-1 so far this season with notable victories against Quincy and Saint Ambrose. Freshman right winger Tyler Philpott has been particularly aggressive offensively with leading shot attempts in the OVC.

Sophomore captain Joel McIntyre was named OVC's Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in securing a draw against Butler. Senior midfielder Jimmy Baars was highlighted as an OVC Player to Watch in the preseason poll.

The team brings back key players from last season including midfielder Oscar Olingdahl and defender Gabe Chapa. The squad also welcomes new talent including goalkeeper Micah Ramirez from Temple and several other transfers along with eleven freshmen recruits.
