Western Illinois University's men's soccer team faced a challenging match against Incarnate Word, resulting in a loss that places them at the bottom of the Ohio Valley Conference standings. This defeat comes after the Leathernecks' recent three-match winning streak as they began their first season in the new conference.
The match started promisingly for Western Illinois when Diego Porras scored his third goal of the season in the 21st minute, marking their first lead in an OVC match. Porras joins teammates Xavier Gagnon and Liam Gainey as players with three or more goals this season. His skillful dribbling through the Cardinal defense was a highlight for WIU.
However, Incarnate Word quickly responded, equalizing just six minutes later. The Cardinals controlled much of the game, outshooting Western Illinois 11-4 in the first half and 22-5 overall. Three UIW players attempted four shots each, while no WIU player managed multiple shots during the match.
Incarnate Word secured victory with a goal in the 79th minute after taking seven corners in the second half. Despite Alexis Michaud's commendable performance as Leatherneck keeper, making nine saves, WIU's defense struggled against UIW's strong offensive play.
Western Illinois will seek to improve their standing as they open their home conference season on Thursday with a rematch against Liberty.
