Western Illinois University pole vaulter Arnie Grunert concluded his season at the NCAA National Outdoor Meet in Eugene, Oregon. Grunert tied for 17th place, earning him an Honorable Mention All-American accolade.
Track and field coach Trey Brokaw expressed pride in Grunert's achievements: "We are so proud of Arnie and his accomplishments this year. He's a great example of where hard work and a winning attitude can get someone. He has a very bright future in the sport and I am confident he will be back at the NCAA Championships again in the future."
During the meet, Grunert cleared 16 feet, 7.5 inches on his second attempt and succeeded in clearing 17-1.5 on his first attempt at the next height. However, he did not clear the third height of 17-7.25, concluding his participation for the year.
An equipment malfunction posed a challenge during warm-ups when Grunert broke a pole mid-jump. Coach Brokaw noted, "In warm-ups, Arnie broke a pole in half, shattering it mid-jump. Other than minor bruises and cuts, he was physically okay to keep jumping." Despite this setback, Grunert maintained composure to finish among the top 20.
Grunert's season included capturing titles at both the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor and Outdoor Meets and setting new program records. He is also noted as the first Leatherneck male athlete to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Meet Championships since 2014.
Coach Brokaw added, "I'm hopeful that the performances of our entire track & field team this season have proven the Leathernecks can have a winning presence in the Ohio Valley Conference and NCAA for many years to come in all sports."
