Cesar Franco played a crucial role in Western Illinois' dramatic win over SIUE, delivering a game-winning performance in the final inning. The Leathernecks secured a 7-6 victory after scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth. This marked their eighth overall win of the season and fourth within the Ohio Valley Conference.

SIUE initially took control by scoring runs in both the first and second innings, leading 2-0. However, Western Illinois quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Liam Bushey initiated the comeback with a single, followed by contributions from Trevor Leon and Brock Lummus that tied the game at 2-2.

Despite WIU's offense stalling during the middle innings, SIUE capitalized by adding one run in the fourth and three more in the eighth to lead 6-2 going into the ninth inning. Yet, WIU mounted a resilient comeback. J.R. Heavilin's single sparked hope as he advanced on a wild pitch. Hits from Brock Lummus and Max Slavens reduced SIUE's lead to 6-3, while Adam Juran further narrowed it to 6-4.

The pivotal moment came when Cesar Franco stepped up to bat as WIU's last chance for victory. Franco hit a decisive three-run home run over right field, securing a thrilling 7-6 win for his team.

Brock Lummus and Max Slavens were instrumental at the bottom of Western Illinois' lineup, each collecting three hits and contributing significantly to WIU's seven RBIs. Adam Juan also performed well with two hits and an RBI from his leadoff position. Kyree Alexander, Liam Bushey, and J.R. Heavilin added to WIU's offensive efforts with hits during the game.

Western Illinois is set to face Big Ten opponent Illinois in an upcoming midweek matchup.
