A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Waverly, Illinois, regarding building permits on October 30, 2024. The request was made by us at West Central Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our request, we sought records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we asked for a list of all new residential and commercial building permits issued from January 1, 2023, until the date of the request. We requested that this information be provided in electronic format and include specific fields such as the type of permit, date issued, fee paid, requester's name, address and contractor's name.
Additionally, we requested a list of all active residential and commercial building permits along with their current status. This list should also include the same fields as mentioned above.
As members of the media dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to these public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that given our role in disseminating information to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We await a response from the City of Waverly and will keep our readers updated on any developments.
