Western Illinois narrowly defeated by UT Martin in overtime basketball match

Western Illinois Men's Basketball team faced a narrow defeat against UT Martin, losing 85-83 in an overtime match held at Western Hall. The game was marked by numerous momentum shifts and intense competition, with the Leathernecks demonstrating resilience throughout.

Ryan Myers led Western Illinois with 19 points, including four critical three-pointers. One of these shots tied the game at 74 late in the second half, pushing it into overtime. Sean Smith also delivered a strong performance with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Julius Rollins contributed 14 points and six rebounds, along with two steals and a block on defense. Marko Maletic added 16 points and excelled at the free-throw line, making seven out of nine attempts.

The contest was closely fought from the beginning, featuring 12 lead changes and ten ties. The Leathernecks capitalized on transition opportunities, scoring 22 fast-break points and converting turnovers into 31 points. However, their own turnovers were costly, as they committed 17 that allowed UT Martin to score 20 points.

In overtime, Western Illinois maintained pressure with key shots from Sean Smith and Ryan Myers. A jumper by Smith gave them an 80-79 lead with just over a minute remaining. Nevertheless, UT Martin responded with a decisive run to secure victory after Myers hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to narrow the margin to two points.

Despite trailing by as many as 13 in the second half, Western Illinois displayed determination and nearly secured a comeback win. They are set to host Tennessee State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
