Western Illinois University (WIU) Athletics, in collaboration with the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), has announced the return of its "Hotcakes for Heroes" event. This initiative is part of the Hoops for Heroes program, which aims to honor local military veterans and first responders by sending them to the OVC Basketball Championship in Evansville, Indiana.

The annual community service project is organized by the OVC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and involves all OVC institutions raising funds within their communities. The goal is to sponsor a local hero's trip to the championship scheduled from March 5-8, 2025.

Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating: "We are excited to bring back the 'Hotcakes for Heroes' fundraiser again this year. It's a unique opportunity for our community to come together and show gratitude to the brave men and women who have served our nation and our local community."

The breakfast fundraiser will take place on Saturday, February 15, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at WIU's East Gym in Western Hall. The proceeds will be used entirely to cover expenses for a veteran or first responder from the Greater Macomb Area attending the tournament. Sodexo has donated supplies needed for this event.

Tickets are priced at $10 each, which includes pancakes and entry to basketball games against Morehead State following the breakfast. Alternatively, attendees can opt for just pancakes at $5 each. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online.

For those unable to attend but wishing to support this cause, donations are welcomed. Nominations for honorees must be submitted by February 12, 2025.
