A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Brown County Election Division on February 5, 2025. The request, made by us at West Central Reporter, sought comprehensive details about the candidates running in the upcoming spring election.
In our commitment to providing accurate and comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs, we asked for a list of all candidates participating in the election. We requested specific information including the candidate's first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and their party affiliation.
Additionally, we also sought contact information for each candidate. This included their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that as media professionals involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver under FOIA.
We await a response from the Brown County Election Division regarding this request. Our goal is to ensure that our readers have access to detailed information about their election candidates as part of our commitment to promoting informed civic participation.
