Western Illinois University's women's basketball team ended a three-game losing streak with a 78-73 overtime victory against Morehead State. The game, held at Western Hall, saw the Leathernecks overcome early difficulties to secure the win.

The Leathernecks struggled initially, scoring only 10 points in the first quarter. However, they improved significantly in the second half, driven by strong performances from Raegan McCowan and Mia Nicastro. McCowan scored a game-high 34 points and made 12 of her 14 free throw attempts. She also contributed defensively with five rebounds and played for a season-high of 42 minutes.

Mia Nicastro was instrumental as well, achieving a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Her performance in the paint helped limit Morehead State's opportunities and her perfect record at the free-throw line was crucial in such a close game. Overall, Western Illinois excelled at free throws, converting 30 out of 35 attempts.

Mallory McDermott added 11 points to the team's effort while Addi Brownfield contributed seven points along with five rebounds and three assists. Brownfield's defensive efforts included two steals and one block before she fouled out late in the game. Madison Davis and Allie Meadows also played key roles by providing defensive stops during critical moments.

The Leathernecks forced overtime through clutch free throws and defensive plays. In overtime, they outscored Morehead State 14-9 by executing well on both ends of the court despite not making any three-pointers throughout the game.

Looking ahead, Western Illinois aims to build on this victory as they prepare for upcoming conference games against SEMO and Little Rock next week.
