Western Illinois University's women's basketball team faced a challenging game against Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) on Thursday night, resulting in a narrow 51-49 defeat at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The Leathernecks struggled significantly in the first quarter, scoring only six points and allowing SEMO to take a commanding 24-6 lead. Western Illinois shot just 2-of-15 from the field during this period and failed to convert any of their eight three-point attempts.
The game's initial struggles were evident as WIU missed several three-point shots and committed turnovers that allowed SEMO to establish an early 8-0 advantage. Addi Brownfield managed to score the team's first points with two free throws nearly three minutes into the game, but offensive difficulties persisted against SEMO's aggressive defense.
SEMO capitalized on its opportunities, successfully hitting six of its first eight three-point attempts. Zoe Best and Lexi McCully were instrumental in this effort, with McCully extending SEMO's lead to 18 points by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Western Illinois began to find some rhythm offensively, outscoring SEMO 13-10. Raegan McCowan contributed significantly by scoring six of her total 13 points before halftime, while Mallory McDermott added a three-pointer that helped reduce the deficit.
The Leathernecks made defensive adjustments after halftime, limiting SEMO to just two points in the third quarter. Addi Brownfield played a crucial role defensively with three blocks as WIU won the rebounding battle 33-26.
By the fourth quarter, WIU had reduced SEMO's lead to single digits. A late three-pointer from McDermott brought them within one possession with less than a minute remaining. After securing a defensive stop, Raegan McCowan tied the game at 49 with a layup with only 17 seconds left. However, Madison Davis committed a foul with six seconds remaining, sending SEMO to the free throw line where they secured victory by making both shots.
Despite outscoring SEMO 43-27 over the final three quarters, Western Illinois could not overcome their slow start. The Leathernecks will aim for better results as they continue their road trip against Little Rock on Saturday at 1 PM.
