Western Illinois University men's soccer team secured a 2-1 comeback victory against SIUE on Thursday night at Korte Stadium. The win keeps the Leathernecks' postseason chances alive with one regular season match remaining.
SIUE took an early lead in the 14th minute, but Western Illinois responded strongly after halftime. Xavier Gagnon scored the equalizer in the 59th minute with an assist from Diego Porras. Seven minutes later, Porras netted the decisive goal following a setup by Liam Gainey.
Goalkeeper Micah Ramirez made five saves, helping his team withstand late pressure from SIUE. Western Illinois recorded 13 shots, nine of which were on target, and held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
The result brings Western Illinois to a record of 4-10-4 overall and 2-3-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play. SIUE now stands at 4-10-2 overall and 3-4-2 in conference matches.
With only one regular season game left, this win gives Western Illinois a critical advantage as they aim for a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference postseason tournament.
