Western Illinois University's baseball team faced a challenging start to their series against New Mexico State, suffering a 9-1 defeat at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces. The Leathernecks struggled to find their rhythm offensively, managing only five hits throughout the game. Their sole run came in the ninth inning when Tyler Large hit a double and was driven home by Justin Bogard.

Starting pitcher Max Tripure delivered five innings for Western Illinois, allowing three earned runs on four hits and striking out six batters. However, the bullpen could not contain New Mexico State's offense, conceding six additional runs over the next three innings.

Defensively, Western Illinois performed without errors but failed to counteract New Mexico State's aggressive batting, which included two home runs and a triple. This loss marks the third consecutive defeat for Western Illinois this season.

The Leathernecks aim to bounce back in the second game of the series scheduled for tomorrow at 5 p.m.
