On a night dedicated to honoring seniors, the Western Illinois University (WIU) Women's Basketball team secured a victory against Lindenwood with a final score of 75-70. The game took place at Western Hall in Macomb, Illinois. WIU, now holding a record of 14-14 overall and 8-11 in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), displayed determination and resilience throughout the match.
Junior forward Mia Nicastro led the team with an impressive performance, scoring 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Raegan McCowan contributed significantly with a double-double, recording 19 points and a season-high of 15 rebounds.
The Leathernecks outperformed Lindenwood on rebounds, securing a 48-31 advantage. This dominance on the glass allowed WIU to convert 17 offensive rebounds into 13 points.
Despite WIU's control over much of the game, Lindenwood made a strong push in the fourth quarter. Led by Brooke Coffey with 16 points and Ellie Brueggemann with 15 points, Lindenwood outscored WIU 25-19 in the final period. However, WIU maintained their composure and made crucial defensive stops to secure their win.
Allie Meadows added to WIU's efforts by hitting four three-pointers for a total of 12 points. Madison Davis contributed defensively with three steals.
The evening was particularly significant for WIU's seniors. Jasmine Nichols started and played eight minutes, making her only shot attempt from beyond the arc. Kennedy Flanagan also started, playing thirteen minutes while contributing three rebounds and one assist.
With this victory marking their last home game of the regular season, WIU looks forward to building momentum as they prepare for their upcoming game against Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee. The game is scheduled for Thursday night at 5:30 PM.
