Western Illinois defeats UT Martin to advance in OVC Tournament

Western Illinois University Women's Basketball team emerged victorious against UT Martin in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. The Leathernecks secured a 78-72 win with strong performances from key players.

Raegan McCowan led Western Illinois with 27 points, showcasing her scoring versatility throughout the game. Addi Brownfield contributed significantly by facilitating plays and recording seven assists. Despite facing challenges with ball control in the second quarter, which allowed UT Martin to tie the game at halftime, Western Illinois maintained their composure.

Mia Nicastro added depth to the team's efforts with 16 points and six rebounds, while Mallory McDermott chipped in with 11 points. The third quarter saw both teams exchange leads multiple times, but Western Illinois managed to regain control thanks to crucial plays by McCowan and Brownfield.

In the final quarter, Allie Meadows hit a pivotal three-pointer that shifted momentum in favor of Western Illinois. Nicastro's free throws and timely jumper further solidified their lead. The Leathernecks' defense played a critical role in securing the win by limiting UT Martin's opportunities and forcing turnovers.

Brownfield also contributed defensively with three steals and was instrumental in transition play. The Leathernecks ended with a rebounding advantage of 34-27 over UT Martin.

The victory propels Western Illinois into the quarterfinals of the OVC tournament where they will face Eastern Illinois Panthers.
