Western Illinois University's women's basketball team faced a challenging game against Lindenwood in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Tournament semifinal, held at the Ford Center. Despite a strong performance by Raegan McCowan, who scored 35 points, Western Illinois fell to Lindenwood with a final score of 86-75.
McCowan's impressive effort included shooting 13-of-27 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. She also contributed six rebounds and one steal during her 36 minutes on the court. Her scoring prowess was evident as she made jump shots, attacked the basket, and converted free throws.
The Leathernecks started strong, leading 19-15 after the first quarter. McCowan opened the scoring with a layup followed by a three-pointer. Western Illinois displayed efficiency from long distance, making four three-pointers in the opening period while their defense limited Lindenwood's scoring opportunities.
Lindenwood countered in the second quarter by outscoring Western Illinois 21-18. Nevertheless, McCowan kept her team competitive with another three-pointer and successful free throws, helping WIU maintain a narrow lead of 37-36 at halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams engage in an offensive battle. McCowan continued to excel offensively for WIU as they scored 23 points; however, Lindenwood edged ahead by adding 25 points to take a one-point advantage into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Lindenwood capitalized on their depth and inside presence to dominate Western Illinois. They outscored WIU 25-15 over this period through second-chance opportunities and free throws. Turnovers were detrimental for Western Illinois as they committed 16 turnovers that resulted in 22 points for Lindenwood. Additionally, Lindenwood's bench significantly outperformed WIU's reserves by contributing 31 points compared to none from WIU’s substitutes.
Despite losing this matchup there were positive aspects for Western Illinois: Mallory McDermott reached her milestone of scoring her career’s thousandth point finishing with twelve total points during what was also her last game wearing Leatherneck colors; meanwhile Raegan McCowan set program records for most single-season points (701) alongside field goals made within one season (256).
Western Illinois concluded its season holding an overall record standing at .500 (16 wins against equal losses) along reaching OVC tournament semifinals within only two years participating under league auspices.
