WIU Baseball faced a setback at home, losing to Southern Indiana with a score of 8-5 at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Leathernecks struggled offensively in the early innings, remaining scoreless until the fourth inning when Southern Indiana took a 2-0 lead. WIU quickly responded as Matt Olive hit a solo home run, his second of the season. Krayton Morse contributed with a double and scored after Kenneth Perez singled and Brock Lummus delivered a sacrifice fly, tying the game at two.
In the fifth inning, WIU gained momentum by scoring three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Paul Osting initiated the rally with a walk, followed by Liam Bushey's single. Tyler Large walked to load the bases for Matt Olive, who reached base on an error that allowed two runs to score. Kenneth Perez then hit another sacrifice fly to extend WIU's lead.
However, Southern Indiana made a comeback in the eighth inning with six runs, securing an 8-5 advantage which they maintained for the remainder of the game. Jason Buhl started for WIU and pitched four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out one batter.
Krayton Morse and Kenneth Perez led WIU offensively, each going 2-for-3 in the game. Morse recorded two doubles and Perez added an RBI. The Leathernecks (6-13) aim for their first conference series win of 2025 in their final game against Southern Indiana scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
