Western Illinois University bolstered its position in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with a 2-0 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Saturday at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.

The team was led by Payton Brown, who excelled with a 4-for-4 performance, including a double, an RBI, and a run. Ruby Tarr contributed two hits, including a double with an RBI, and Megan Leonard added three hits from the ninth spot in the lineup.

Western Illinois struck early when Brown scored in the first inning and Tarr secured an insurance run with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Freshman Libby Spaulding delivered a commanding complete-game shutout, conceding only six hits and striking out four without walks. Her record improved to 3-5 for the season with this game marking her second shutout and complete game of the year.

The Leathernecks demonstrated flawless defense, making no errors. Maria Luna led with seven putouts, while Malia Robertson provided additional support with two putouts and an assist.

Despite stranding 11 runners, Western Illinois’ 10-hit effort proved sufficient. SIUE struggled with runners in scoring position, leaving five on base. This victory is one of Western Illinois' most comprehensive performances this season, handing SIUE its fifth conference loss.

Western Illinois has now moved into eighth place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, surpassing UT Martin. The team is set to continue its momentum in the upcoming series against Morehead State University on April 26-27.
