Western Illinois University's softball team faced a tough doubleheader against Tennessee State, demonstrating offensive capabilities but ultimately falling in both games played on April 6, 2025.
In the first game, the Leathernecks were defeated 7-3, despite a strong pitching performance by Audrey Clark, who pitched the entire game, striking out five batters and allowing just one earned run. Maria Luna led the offense with a 1-for-2 performance, hitting a home run and driving in all three of the team’s runs in the sixth inning. The defense performed well, making no errors.
The second game saw Western Illinois increase their offensive output, recording 11 hits and scoring five runs in a narrow 7-5 loss. Key contributors included Ruby Tarr and Payton Brown, both going 2-for-4, and RyLee German, who went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored. However, the pitchers, Libby Spaulding and Kathryn McChristy, gave up six hits and six earned runs combined, with Clark conceding a single hit in the seventh inning.
While the Leathernecks faced defeats, their performance at the plate indicates potential as Ohio Valley Conference play proceeds. The team will conclude their series against Tennessee State on Monday, April 7, at 1 p.m. in Macomb, Illinois.
