Western Illinois University’s softball team experienced defeat in both games of a doubleheader against Morehead State on Sunday, April 27. The contests took place in Morehead, Kentucky, where despite several noteworthy offensive efforts from Western Illinois players, Morehead State secured victories in both games.

The first game ended after five innings with a 16-6 victory for Morehead State. Western Illinois managed to accumulate 11 hits, with Payton Brown leading the team by going three for four, including a double. Ruby Tarr contributed two hits and an RBI, while Lillie Wools drove in two runs. Additionally, Sophia Sanchez scored two runs and collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly. Despite these efforts, defensive errors and pitching struggles halted Western Illinois from maintaining their early momentum.

In the second game, the Leathernecks narrowly fell 6-5. Brown demonstrated her skill again by going three for three with two doubles, a home run, and an RBI. Jillian Morris added a run with a double, and Sanchez contributed two RBIs through a single and a sacrifice. Rylee Boone made an impact with a pinch-hit single. On the mound, Audrey Clark started the game pitching 2.1 innings, with Kathryn McChristy providing relief for 3.2 innings.

Overall, the team amassed 17 hits and scored 11 runs across the two games, yet their opponents’ effective late-game strategies secured Morehead State the wins.

Western Illinois now stands at 11-34 for the season and has a 7-17 record in Ohio Valley Conference play. They aim to finish the regular season strongly in their upcoming games against Eastern Illinois University on May 3 and 4.
