Illinois House Republicans have expressed strong opposition to proposed tax increases amounting to $6 billion, which are being promoted by progressive groups. The opposition was voiced at a recent Capitol news conference where Deputy Republican Leader Norine Hammond and Assistant Republican Leaders C.D. Davidsmeyer and Amy Elik criticized the proposals as "outrageous and unacceptable."

Progressive Democrats have been advocating for a graduated income tax hike, despite a previous rejection by Illinois voters of a similar amendment in 2020. The Illinois Revenue Alliance has suggested tax hikes that would bring in $6 billion. Rep. Hammond has pointed out that these proposals would adversely affect Illinois families and businesses.

"These progressive special interests that are part of the Illinois Revenue Alliance, aka the 'Tax-and-Spend Alliance,' are proposing $6 billion in new taxes on hardworking Illinois families and businesses," noted Hammond, emphasizing the potential for economic damage and increased living costs.

Particular concern was raised by Hammond over a proposed hike in the Estate Tax, which would halve the exemption from $4 million to $2 million. Hammond argued this would place undue burdens on family farmers.

"Our family farmers are struggling enough already," Hammond stated. "They shouldn't have to sell the family farm just to pay this unfair tax."

Amy Elik addressed the lack of proposed cuts from state agencies as an alternative to increasing taxes and highlighted other pressing financial burdens facing Illinois residents.

"So far this spring, we haven’t talked about the most important issues affecting Illinois families, like high property taxes and the high cost of living and doing business in Illinois," she remarked.

Simultaneously, criticism was directed towards Governor JB Pritzker over his political rhetoric and national political ambitions. Comments made by Pritzker at various events were described as inflammatory, particularly in their references to political opposition and calls for activism.

Pritzker, during a March speech, stated, "Bullies respond to one thing, and one thing only, a punch in the face." Additional remarks were delivered at a New Hampshire Democratic Party fundraiser where he suggested, "Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption, but I am now. These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace."

Rep. Davidsmeyer strongly condemned these statements, urging for apologies to Republicans and criticizing Pritzker's focus on national aspirations over state responsibilities.

"Governor Pritzker, your comments are appalling. You should apologize to all Republicans for encouraging harassment and disruption as you focus on your White House aspirations," said Davidsmeyer.

The Republicans emphasized the need for Pritzker to engage with them in crafting a balanced state budget instead of engaging in inflammatory rhetoric.

"The Governor should be spending his time working with us on a balanced budget, rather than threatening to punch Republicans in the face," Davidsmeyer concluded.
