A new law in Illinois aims to simplify the process for people with permanent disabilities seeking disability license plates or parking decals. Senate Bill 1256, recently signed into law, removes the requirement for these individuals or their guardians to provide yearly medical documentation to the Secretary of State.
The bill was sponsored in the Illinois House by State Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Murrayville) and in the Senate by State Senator Steve McClure (R-Springfield). According to Davidsmeyer, "basic common-sense" changes will reduce hassle for both residents and government agencies. "If a person is permanently disabled, they shouldn’t have to prove it every year," he said.
Previously, families were required to make regular doctor visits and submit paperwork each year, resulting in additional costs and time commitments. The new law is intended to save both resources for those affected.
Davidsmeyer has served as a Republican member of the Illinois State House since 2012, representing the 100th House District after replacing Jim Watson.
