Western Illinois University’s football team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Valparaiso 51-30 at Hanson Field. The Leathernecks improved their record to 1-2.
The Leathernecks opened the game with a touchdown run by Markell Holman. In the second quarter, Chris Irvin threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Demari Davis, ran for a four-yard score himself, and later connected with Holman for a 15-yard touchdown. Western Illinois led 28-3 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Irvin completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Alex Williams and Antonio Chadha made a 48-yard field goal. Brinston Williams added a 21-yard rushing touchdown in the second half. Antwon McKay Jr. threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Lanier in the fourth quarter.
Irvin finished with three passing touchdowns and one rushing score, completing 13 of his 20 passes for 247 yards. Davis caught five passes for 106 yards and one touchdown; Williams had 54 receiving yards and one score; Holman recorded both a rushing and receiving touchdown along with 74 rushing yards; Brinston Williams contributed another rushing touchdown.
Defensively, Western Illinois forced three fumbles and registered seven tackles for loss. Christian Pierce led with three tackles while Brock Sperling recorded a sack.
Valparaiso managed two late scores, including returning a kickoff for a touchdown, but Western Illinois’ early lead was decisive.
Western Illinois (1-2) will travel next week to face Eastern Washington.
