Western Illinois University’s women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against UT Martin on Sunday at Skyhawk Soccer Field. The Leathernecks, who now have a record of 1-16-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference, conceded the first goal in the 38th minute after UT Martin scored from a corner kick.
In the second half, Western Illinois responded with an equalizer in the 72nd minute. Hattie Mourning came off the bench to score her first goal of the season, assisted by Claire Brown.
The Leathernecks took 12 shots during the match, with 10 coming in the second half. Goalkeepers Lillian Johns and Ariel Bernard combined for 10 saves; Johns made five saves before halftime and Bernard contributed five more in the second half.
Mourning’s goal was part of a stronger second-half performance for Western Illinois, which saw them control possession and create several late scoring chances.
The team will finish their season next week at home against USI.
