Western Illinois women’s basketball defeats NIU to extend season-opening win streak

Western Illinois University's women's basketball team secured a 68-50 win over Northern Illinois University on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center, marking their second consecutive victory to start the season.

The Leathernecks established control by outscoring the Huskies in three of four quarters. Their defense limited NIU to only seven points in the second quarter, giving Western Illinois a 27-19 lead at halftime. The team extended its advantage with a strong fourth quarter, scoring 24 points.

Mia Nicastro led Western Illinois with a double-double, recording 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting and collecting 11 rebounds along with two blocks. Addi Brownfield contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Allie Meadows added 12 points and two steals, while Mallory Shetley finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Leathernecks shot 45.3 percent from the field and held a significant rebounding edge over NIU, finishing with a 40-25 advantage. They scored 34 points in the paint and forced Northern Illinois into 18 turnovers, converting those into 12 points.

For Northern Illinois, Emilie Sorensen was the top scorer with 17 points. Nadechka Laccen added another 10 points for the Huskies.

Western Illinois will continue its nonconference schedule at home next week against Chicago State on November 17 and Bradley on November 20.
