Western Illinois University’s football team lost its final home game of the season, falling 22-17 to Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at Hanson Field in Macomb. The Leathernecks now hold a 3-8 record for the year.

The Leathernecks started strong, taking a 17-10 lead into halftime. Antonio Chadha kicked a 53-yard field goal and quarterback Cason Carswell threw touchdown passes to Markell Holman and Demari Davis. Holman finished with 118 rushing yards and 70 receiving yards, while Davis had 104 receiving yards. Carswell ended the day with 287 passing yards.

Despite outgaining SEMO by a margin of 398 to 372 total yards and having more time of possession, Western Illinois was unable to score in the second half. SEMO turned the game around with an 80-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and added a safety in the fourth quarter.

On defense, Christian Pierce led Western Illinois with ten tackles and one-and-a-half sacks. Malini Ti'a contributed nine tackles as well. The Leathernecks’ defense managed three sacks and six quarterback hurries but could not prevent SEMO from securing the win with late-game plays.

Western Illinois will finish its season next week on the road against Gardner Webb.
