McDonough District Hospital issued the following announcement on May 23.

McDonough District Hospital will offer free Childbirth and Infant Care classes beginning with a Cesarean Section class on Thursday, June 7, from 6-8 p.m. in Auditorium B in the lower level of MDH.

This one-evening class will provide information about some of the common reasons for cesarean birth. Discussion will also include what to expect during your postoperative period. This class is strongly recommended for those who wish to have their support person join them in the operating room.

Expecting parents can also register for the Postpartum Care and Understanding Your Newborn class on Thursday, June 14 from 6-8:15 p.m., this course will focus on what to expect after baby is born, including the emotional changes, physical changes, the importance of rest and proper nutrition, and family planning.

Additionally, an 8-hour L.A.T.E. class is offered on Saturday, June 23. This one-day class runs from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. This course explains the stages of labor – Latent, Active, Transition, and Expulsion (L.A.T.E.); breathing and relaxation techniques; and a tour of the Obstetrics Department. There will be several short breaks during the class, as well as a 30-minute lunch break.

Other class options beginning July 5 include the 4-Week L.A.T.E. Class. Taught by experienced obstetric nurses, the series uses games and humor to make this a rewarding experience for the participant and her support person. The content is the same as the 8-Hour L.A.T.E. Class divided up over the course of four weeks from 6-8:15 p.m. on Thursday evenings.

MDH also offers an online class for expectant families. The internet-based program is a convenient alternative for those who can’t attend an on-site class due to scheduling conflicts, time constraints or health issues.
