McDonough County Law & Legal Committee met April 2.

Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:

The Law & Legal Committee held its monthly meeting on Monday, April 2, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was held at the McDonough County Courthouse in the Law Library. Committee members present included Chairman Travis Hiel, George Dixon, Alice Henry, Clarke Kelso, Rod McGrew, Jerome Anderson, Lee Calvert and County Chairman Scott Schwerer. Other persons in attendance were Patrick Stout, Ric Smart, Tara Litchfield, Chief Deputy Nick Petitgout, and County Clerk Gretchen DeJaynes.

Chairman Hiel called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Review & Approve March 5, 2018 Minutes

Member Dixon moved with a second by Member McGrew to approve the March 5, 2018 minutes as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Waste Management Update

David Schwaab gave the report. There was some question on the 33.30 tons of Declassified SPW waste from Ohio

Tri-County R & WM Report

No Report.

Veteran’s Assistance and Van Report

Veteran’s Superintendent Ric Smart gave the report. Nine Veterans were given assistance in March amounting to $2,154.31. The transportation van made 11 trips to Iowa City transporting 21 Veterans, a total of 2,826 miles. Drivers contributed 72 hours of their time. The monthly van report now reflects totals for the year, not just monthly totals.

Sheriff’s Report

Chief Deputy Nick Petitgout presented the monthly report. Jail average was 32. The deputies handled 740 assorted incidents in March. The Public Aid savings on inmate medical for January, February and March was $1,691.22.

They had their first inmate receive their GED though an online program called i-pathways, a program designed to help inmates prepare for the GED tests while incarcerated. Sheriff Rick VanBrooker turned in his resignation letter for retirement effective May 1, 2018.

Assessor’s Office Update

No report.

Claims Review and Approval

Member McGrew moved with a second by Member Henry to approve the claims as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Other

Alice Henry spoken with Lori Chaplin regarding the juvenile care claims, there are great this year, we will probably run out of budget.

County Chairman Schwerer talked to Senator Tracey about a bill that would reduce replacement tax. A discussion was held on the wind and solar farm projects.

County Chairman Schwerer received a letter from Sheriff VanBrooker concerning his appending retirement. Sheriff VanBrooker will retire effective May 1, 2018.

With no further business to discuss, Member Henry moved with a second by Member Dixon to adjourn the meeting at 7:24 p.m.
