WESTERN ILLINOIS MUSEUM: Windows are coming out!

Windows

Western Illinois Museum issued the following announcement on June 30.

We’re making progress! This week the removal of the old windows has begun. While we’re a bit sad to see these old window go, it is necessary to keep the building structurally sound and take the next step being able to fully utilize this historic building. The replacements will look just like the original 1941 style windows but with all the features of a modern double pane energy efficient window.

The museum put out a call for bids and received two for the window replacement project. The low bid was accepted and awarded to Laverdiere Construction. Wasting no time beginning the job, the window removal began this last week. We anticipate the removal to be complete by the first week in July. The openings are being boarded up while the brickwork is completed.

At the same time, Jerry Vawter will continue removing the paint and tuckpointing the brickwork. Laverdiere’s team will work alongside Jerry to replace the rusted lintels. The next step is to install a frame or buck for installing the new windows. Pella suggested that measurements be taken from the newly installed bucks for the best fit. Once the order is placed, the custom windows -made in Macomb- will take three weeks. Laverdiere’s crew with then install the new windows!

Here are a few photographs of the crew working on the project. We’ll keep you up to date on facebooks and on our website. Thank you for all your support in revitalizing our historic building and safeguarding our collection.
