McDonough District Hospital issued the following announcement on July 20.
For the second consecutive year, McDonough District Hospital participated in the Rural Student Physician Program (RSPP) through the University Of Illinois College of
Medicine. Medical student Catherine Jimenez spent 28 weeks with MDH as part of the hospital’s partnership with the University of Illinois.
Jimenez gained valuable experience during her time at MDH working with: General Surgery, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Family Clinic, Psychiatry, and the hospitalist program. MDH general surgeon Dr. Edwin Card served as her main preceptor throughout the 28 weeks.
Her scholastic duties also included completing a research project, where Jimenez focused on pregnancies in rural communities.
MDH is scheduled to participate in the RSPP again in 2018-19, sponsoring its third student.
About the RSPP: RSPP is a longitudinal, integrated clerkship that provides third-year medical students an immersive clinical community-based experience. Students spend 28 weeks in a rural community learning one-on-one with physician mentors. Students accepted into the program gain a deep understanding and appreciation for rural primary care medicine. The close apprenticeship-like supervision allows students more opportunities for knowledge growth and skill acquisition – especially those who are self-directed – than is found in most standard rotations. Participants in RSPP: experience continuity of care with their patients; work directly with attending physicians; do not have to compete for patients or to perform procedures; optimize a schedule tailored to their interest and “go where the action is”; gain competency in interdisciplinary problem-solving; experience austere medicine at one of many rural Illinois sites.
