'Taste of Spain' Raises Money to Help with International Study Opportunities

'Taste of Spain' Raises Money to Help with International Study Opportunities

The culture and cuisine of Spain came to Macomb Nov. 5 at Phi Beta Delta's "Taste of Spain" event, held at the Campus Students for Christ facility.

Approximately 65 WIU students, faculty and community members joined Phi Beta Delta members to enjoy a classic Spanish meal and presentations on Spanish culture.

Phi Beta Delta is an international, honorary organization, and annually hosts a meal and culture night to raise money for scholarships for international students studying at WIU, as well as for WIU Study Abroad participants.

Guada Cabedo-Timmons, a native of Spain and professor of Spanish at WIU, chose the menu and directed preparation of the food, with a main course of Paella, with Tarta de Santiago for dessert. Cabedo-Timmons was assisted by WIU students Laia Meseguer, Dana Castillo, Clara Flores, Agatha Carbonell, Isabel Navas and Aina Cortina, who are all from Spain.

Following the meal, a presentation on Spain and its culture was given by WIU student Sara Villazan, a native of Seville, Spain, who is a recipient of a Phi Beta Delta scholarship. WIU students Arisleide Valdez, Anthony Ippolito, Michelle Narvaez and Natalie Palomino shared information on their Study Abroad trip to Spain over the past spring semester.

"Guada and her students were a delight to work with, and we could not have had 'Taste of Spain' without them," said David Behymer, PBD treasurer and coordinator of the event. "This type of event gives everyone a greater sense of our global community and it is right here in Macomb."

A sale of international items was also held at the event to raise scholarship funds.

A similar event will be held next year with the Caribbean tentatively set as the area of geographic interest.

PBD membership is open to WIU faculty and students, as well as community members interested in international education and exchange of cultures. For application information, contact Michael Lorenzen at MG-Lorenzen@wiu.edu or Patti Jones at PI-Jones@wiu.edu.
