Western Illinois women's tennis starts strong at Cougar Invite

The Western Illinois University women's tennis program commenced its fall campaign with notable performances at the SIUE Cougar Invite in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Paige Grice led the team, achieving a 3-0 record in singles and a 2-1 record in doubles.

On Friday, the Leathernecks secured significant victories by winning four out of six singles matches against Bradley and two out of three doubles matches against SIUE. However, they lost two out of three doubles matches to Lindenwood.

In the singles match against Bradley, Western Illinois showcased their depth by winning at the No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 positions. Paige Grice won her No. 2 singles match in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-2. Newcomers Chloe Routier (No. 3) and Richardlyne Francois (No. 4) both won their matches with identical scores of 6-4, 6-4. Mana Fawcett secured a victory at No. 6 with a score of 7-5, 7-5.

Against SIUE in doubles play, Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Nour Gueblaoui triumphed at No. 1 doubles with a score of 6-4. The No. 2 team of Fawcett and Grice also won their match with a matching score of 6-4.

In their encounter with Lindenwood on Friday, Grice and Fawcett completed their perfect day by winning their doubles match with a score of 6-3.

The Leathernecks will take a two-week break before heading to Evansville, Indiana for the Ohio Valley Conference Individual Tournament on September 21 and September 22.

On Saturday, Western Illinois began the day with a decisive victory over Lindenwood by winning five out of six matches. Grice continued her unbeaten streak by winning her No. 2 singles match (6-2, 6-4), while Fawcett prevailed at No. 5 (6-2,7 -5). Routier (No.3), Francois (No .4), and Anna-Evelina Trush (No .6) also earned victories for Western Illinois.

However , Bradley swept all three doubles matches against WIU on Saturday . In an additional round , Bradley won both singles matches .

In the final single match against SIUE , Western Illinois fell short , losing five out of six matches . Grice managed to secure one win for WIU at No .1 singles , ending her weekend positively .
