Western Illinois University women's soccer team faced Drake on Sunday afternoon in their seventh match of the season. Both teams entered the game seeking their first win, with Drake having recently drawn against Green Bay.
Drake scored twice in the first half, dominating the offensive play with 14 shot attempts, six of which were on target. Western Illinois goalkeeper Ariel Bernard made four saves in the first half. The Leathernecks failed to record any shot attempts and lost the corner battle 6-0.
In the second half, Drake continued to pressure Western Illinois's defense. Ten minutes into the half, senior Alexis Betker scored from nearly 30 yards out, marking her first career goal for Western Illinois. Despite this effort, it was their only shot attempt of the match.
Drake maintained a strong defense throughout the remainder of the game, securing a 2-1 victory and their first win of the season. The Leathernecks concluded their non-conference schedule without earning any points.
Western Illinois will begin Ohio Valley Conference play against Lindenwood next Sunday in St. Charles.
