Western Illinois University women's soccer began Ohio Valley Conference play on Sunday afternoon with a match against Lindenwood in St. Charles, Missouri. The Leathernecks, who defeated the Lions in last year's season finale, faced a challenging start to their conference season as they were outshot 31-1.
Lindenwood maintained control throughout the match, dominating possession and keeping the ball in Western Illinois' defensive third for most of the game. Despite this pressure, defenders Ali Matthews, Rachel Balinao, and Rita Moran managed to clear several threats during the first half.
Goalkeeper Ariel Bernard delivered a notable performance, saving ten of eleven shots on goal. However, Lindenwood secured victory with a goal by Sophia Mueller in the 76th minute.
In addition to their shooting advantage, Lindenwood also led in corner kicks with an eight-to-one margin. Western Illinois received five yellow cards during the match.
The Leathernecks are set to face Morehead State next Thursday at John MacKenzie Alumni Field for their conference home opener.
