The Leatherneck cross country teams wrapped up their season at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on November 9, 2023. Denise Dominguez led the women's team for the first time this season, closely followed by Ayana Cezar. On the men's side, Logan Lommel maintained his position as Western Illinois University's (WIU) top runner throughout the season, with Robert Perry finishing just eight seconds behind him.
Coach Trey Brokaw expressed optimism about the team's future: "Our young squad saw a lot of personal improvement this year. With a little more depth added through recruiting and continued talented development," he said. "I'm hopeful we can be a top-tier team in the Ohio Valley Conference and place well at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships next year."
Throughout the season, the Leathernecks participated in six races, collectively covering over 350 miles. Notably, there are no seniors on this year's roster, allowing for the entire team to return for the 2024 season.
The season began with both squads securing second-place finishes at the Western Illinois Alumni Invite on September 1, where Madison Trevena and Logan Lommel were standout performers. At subsequent events like the Redbird Invite and Joe Piane Invite, athletes such as Aylana Cezar and Logan Lommel continued to lead their respective teams.
During the Bradley Pink Classic on October 13, Meg Simmons and Lydia Bennett spearheaded a strong performance from the women's team, which finished second in their race category. The men's team placed 23rd overall in their event.
The Leathernecks made their debut at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship meet on October 28. The men's team secured seventh place while the women finished eighth out of eleven teams. Logan Lommel achieved a significant milestone with his second-best career time over an 8k distance.
Robert Perry's performance also stood out as he became one of WIU's top five fastest runners over an 8k distance.
