Western Illinois University's Logan Lommel has been recognized with the Ohio Valley Conference's Scholar-Athlete Award for 2023-24. This award is one of the highest honors given to student-athletes in the conference, acknowledging achievements both academically and athletically, as well as leadership qualities.
"I cannot express how happy I am to see Logan named an OVC Scholar-Athlete," said Paul A. Bubb, Western Illinois Director of Athletics. "He is more than deserving and this is a great start for Western Illinois University in the Ohio Valley Conference."
The selection process involved voting by OVC Faculty Athletics Representatives from a group of finalists. Jeremy Robinett, Western Illinois Faculty Athletics Representative, expressed pride in Lommel's accomplishments: "In addition to excelling in multiple sports and events, he has demonstrated a commitment to serving others through community service in the Macomb-area and in his hometown."
Honorees must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA and have distinguished themselves athletically during the 2022-23 school year. Lommel has excelled both on the track and field teams at Western Illinois, focusing on mile and 3000-meter steeplechase events. He holds school records in several categories including the 8K and 10K cross country races.
"Logan is an excellent representative of what it means to be a scholar athlete," said Trey Brokaw, head coach of Western Illinois track and field and cross country. "With two semesters left before his eligibility ends, Logan looks to expand on the six WIU school records he has already set."
Academically, Lommel graduated with a degree in History Education with a GPA of 3.938 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in history with a perfect GPA of 4.00. He was also nominated as a WIU Lincoln Laureate.
Other recipients of the OVC Scholar-Athlete Award include Peyton Calitri (Tennessee Tech), Matea Diekema (SIUE), Dylan Mott (UT Martin), Ryley Preece (Morehead State), and Yao Giada Zhou (Tennessee Tech).
